The vineyard, covering an area of 35 hectares, is cultivated at an altitude of approximately 550 meters. Its ancient and heterogeneous soil, composed of limestone and *galestro* (a schistous marl), encourages the Sangiovese grape variety to deliver its best expression, giving rise to complex and elegant wines: the emblematic Brunello. For us, vineyard management means precision and a constant presence among the vines. Extensive geological studies have allowed us to classify the Poggio Antico vineyards into 6 macro-units and 15 soil units; the latter constitute the micro-terroirs of the domaine, whose grapes are harvested and vinified separately. Poggio Antico is the birthplace of Brunello, perched on the heights: a unique experience, bathed in the light and colours of the most authentic Tuscany.

    Owner and history

Poggio Antico was founded in 1976, bringing together three historic farms located on the southwestern slopes of Montalcino – an area long dedicated to agriculture, as evidenced by the 18th-century Leopoldian land register. From the outset, the high altitude, natural isolation, and complex soils have guided the domaine towards a clear path: environmentally friendly viticulture, rigorous selection and a refined winemaking style, faithful to the terroir. Over the years, Poggio Antico has established itself as a domaine respected independent, recognized for its rigor and a winemaking style marked by restraint and reflection, always faithful to the character of its terroir. In the early 2000s, the domaine has embarked on a process of renewal: modernization of facilities through new technologies, reorganization of the vineyard, and expansion of the range with the addition of two Toscana IGT wines. The arrival of the new owner, Marcel van Poecke, in 2017, marked the beginning of a new phase focused on development and quality, while preserving the historical heritage of the domaine.

    Vinification and aging

Organic and sustainable viticulture. The use of green manures and cover crops is practiced as needed to balance nutrients, improve soil porosity, and limit erosion. Pruning is adapted to the age of the vineyard, soil type, vine vigor, and exposure to minimize vine stress and promote longevity. Copper, sulfur, and biological control agents are used to combat pathogens. The application of natural manure stimulates soil vitality, while plant-based tonics strengthen the vines' natural defenses.

Winemaking: Fermentation lasts 8 days in truncated conical stainless steel tanks at a controlled low temperature (not exceeding 23°C). This is followed by an additional 6-day maceration without punching down; instead, gentle pump-overs are carried out to keep the skins moist and ensure homogenization of the liquid.
Aging: Half of the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks, while the other half ages for 12 months in large French oak casks.
