The use of organic farming practices, biodynamic experimentation and vineyard redesign to promote biodiversity positions L'Évangile as a natural leader in the Pomerol appellation. The site is a pilot in terms of technical adaptations to cope with climate change, from late pruning of the most frost-sensitive plots to optimization of leaf area to better manage water stress. Thanks to the amateur beekeepers in our ranks, to Château The Gospel, bees have become a subject of collective and unifying interest: 5 hives have been installed on site, and the whole team participates in the harvest and packaging, guided by our winegrower beekeepers.

    Owner and history

In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite acquired L'Évangile. The Ducasse family was keen to ensure the estate's continued care and long-term viability. Nestled in the heart of abundant nature, it's a place teeming with ideas and experiences. A place where, just beyond the red wooden doors, we find ourselves in the vineyards where the team carefully tends and cares for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines. Château L'Évangile is also the first of the Barons de Rothschild Lafite estates to be farmed organically. All the vines have been replanted and are learning to adapt.

    Vinification and aging

It is through one of those mysteries of geology that, on this plateau, southeast of Pomerol, a curious accident brought to the surface a long streak of gravel, a rare earth upon which the vineyard rests. Château The Gospel.

Its location is quite privileged: bordered to the north by the vineyards of Château Petrus, he is not separated from Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion, to the south, only by a secondary road.

On 22 hectares, 43 plots evoke by their name their environment (Maison, Cuvier), their place name (Catusseau, Chantecaille, Jean Faure) or even their configuration (La Pointe).

This vineyard area is based on three main terroir units. First, pelosols, characterized by swelling clays at the summit of the plateau. Then, soils with a gravelly-clay to gravelly-sandy texture. Finally, in the lower part of the appellation, predominantly sandy soils.

The grape varieties planted in the L'Évangile vineyard give pride of place to Merlot (79%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (20%) and a little Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).

    The team's opinion

THE Château The 2016 L'Évangile is one of the estate's most brilliant modern achievements. This 2016 comes from an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux, characterized by a dry summer with cool nights that allowed for perfect skin ripeness while preserving remarkable freshness.
